Harriet Tubman's Greatest Achievement
In the year 1849, Harriet Tubman decided to run from slavery. Araminta Ross was born into slavery in 1822. Even at an early age, Tubman was taking care of people, working in the field, and even cooking. When she married a free black man named John Tubman, she took her mother's first name and her husband's last name and became Harriet Tubman. Regardless of not having a great childhood, she still made the most out of it and accomplished many things later in her life. Although she saved more people as a Civil War spy, she took more of a risk with the UGGR. “I kept on singing until we brought it all aboard. We got 800 people that day, and we tore up the railroad and fired the bridge.” (Document C). When Tubman was a Civil War spy, she didn’t have to risk as much as the UGGR. While being a spy, she had the protection of troops, in comparison to the UGGR when she had a $40,000 bounty on her and she had to steer clear of the fugitive slave act. After that, Tubman served as a nurse for the wounded survivors of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteers. Document D. The. Despite the recognition that she got for this job, she impacted many more during her time conducting the UGGR. For example, she even drugged babies just to safely escape without getting caught. This impacted the slaves because it showed how willing she was to help save them. Finally, Tubman served as a caregiver for the last 48 years of her life. Document E. -. Even though she was a caregiver for a longer period, she helped to free more slaves with the UGGR. She was also able to focus more on her work during the UGGR because she didn’t have to take as much care of herself and other people at the same
