Helen was born on June 27th 1880. She grew up in Tuscumbia, Alabama. In February 1882 Helen became sick with the illness that took her sight and hearing. Although she couldn’t speak Helen created signs to communicate with her family. When Helen met her teacher Annie Sullivan on March 3rd, 1887, she learned to read Braille, write, and behave within several months. One of these is that when she was a little over a year old she became ill. When her parents thought the illness was gone a new problem struck. The sickness had taken her sight and hearing. Helen had learned a little bit of speech in the years before she became blind and deaf, but after the sickness the speech she knew faded away. Now that Helen was blind and deaf, she became difficult. Some of Helen’s relatives even thought she should live in a mental institute because of her temper tantrums, and disabilities. These problems made life difficult for Helen.
Helen had many excellent qualities in her personality. She was very dedicated to what she did. When she decided she wanted to learn how to speak, she kept trying until she could. When she wanted to go to different schools, she kept up even though she couldn’t hear her teacher speak. Helen was also very smart. When she took a test to apply for Radcliffe she passed it easily. These qualities helped Helen become the person we know
