Historical Development of Nursing Timeline Introduction
The evolution of nursing as a profession had showed through time that it is both an art and science. Before the 19th century, the military and religious orders are the ones who perform the duties of how nurses work today. As time went by, different events throughout history such as wars and epidemics had shaped nursing to its present organization. Nowadays, nursing is pushing further towards the future in improving itself as a profession for better care and service to the community. In 1979, Sister Calista Roy introduced the adaptation model of nursing. She stressed out that a person is a bio-psycho-social being who is in a constant interaction with the environment. Thus, adaptation is essential in fostering care for one’s health and wellness. Roy also stressed the importance of psychological aspects in terms of being healthy. In this theory, principles of psychology are prominent in the execution of care and nursing intervention.
Patricia Benner and Judith Rubbel formulated one of the most recent nursing theories in 1989. They considered the primacy of caring in nursing science. This principle comes from the perspective of a nurse whose duty is to care. Thus, it is important that it would be inherent to nurses to become caring persons as a whole. When we care generally for the environment, family, friends and the like, this disposition and compassion is also experienced everytime we tend and work with our patients as nurses. Benner and Rubbel touched the central function of nursing as a science in terms of caring. Relationship between Nursing Science and the Profession
