The Yellowstone fire of 1988 produced the largest wildfire in Yellowstone National Park history. Starting out as regular, smaller fires that are common and sometimes let alone to burn, the fires grew out of control due to drought and high winds. The fires, beginning in June, continued to burn immensely and destroyed acres of the park until November, when snow extinguished the last flames. Because of the fires, 1.2 million of acres were burned, 120 million dollars was spent on fighting the fires, and the recruitment of over 25,000 individuals were needed to combat the devastating wildfire.
