Some families’ build fences to keep out unwanted individuals, to avoid a broken home. In 1950s, the time during the Harlem Renaissance, a formal baseball player named Troy Maxson struggle to keep his family and friends close. Troy is never taught how to love anyone the right way. He blames his family for his father’s actions during his childhood, and he also blames racism on a reason why he couldn’t make it to become a pro baseball player. Troy Maxson is borne North by the great migration of his people searching for the promised land. Unskilled and unwanted, he searches the streets of distant cities until the day he kills a man to stay alive. He learns how to play baseball in jail. Although Troy doesn’t want to build a fence, he needs to give his full devotion and love to Rose. Troy doesn’t want a fence to separate himself from the other females. He still wants to be free to life, even though he is married.
Rose tries to avoid her husband cheating and to better her kids’ relationship with their father. She loved him and didn’t want anything more to be safety for her marriage. According in the script, “ you gonna drink yourself to death.”-Act1.1. She wanted Troy to build a fence around the house which symbolizes his family and a relationship with others. Rose thought and knew she had a purpose with building a fence to keep her relationship with her family to continuously to grow forever until her husband cheated.
Gabriel is Troy’s brother, who has a fence of being mental, caused by him being involved in World War II. He was disabled but didn’t want any help from his brother. His check from the navy came and he was able to move out into his own apartment. He feared his brother would be mad at him, according to the script, “ Troy you aint mad at me is you?...”
