Although Scrooge from, A Christmas Carol, and George Bailey from, It’s a Wonderful Life, seem like very different characters, they also have some similarities. At the beginning of their stories they have almost nothing in common. Their family life is different, and so is their involvement in their communities. Towards the end of their stories is when they begin to be more the same. Their transformations show that similarity. Starting with their family; they don’t have any similarities. Scrooge is an old man who lives alone. He doesn’t have a wife or kids, just a nephew, Fred, whom he doesn’t have much of a relationship with. Fred is the opposite of Scrooge. This is demonstrated when Fred states, “Uncle Ebenezer! I cannot tell you what a joy it is to see your happy, smiling face.” On the other hand, George Bailey has a wife and four kids. He loved his wife, Mary, since they were in high school. They also live in an old abandoned house that Mary wanted to renovate for their own, which is a complete contrast from Scrooge. …show more content…
Scrooge rarely does anything to help in his community. When charity workers came to his house and asked if he would donate, he turned them down. Everyone in the town hates him, including Mrs. Cratchit. She told her husband that she didn’t want Scrooge to stay for dinner with them. Meanwhile, George spends his whole life helping and contributing to his community. He gives his own money so that people can continue living in the houses he helped provide for them. He positively affects everyone and is selfless in giving to them. It is apparent that it is true when Clarence told him, “Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?” Clarence impacted George in a way that changed his life
