Apraxia is a word derived from the Greek word ‘praxis’ which means action. The term Apraxia was first coined by Steinthal (1871) who described Apraxia as ‘the inability to make a voluntary action related to object use in the absence of paralysis’. Apraxia (labelled dyspraxia if considered mild) is considered a neurological disorder characterized by the loss in the ability to carry out skilled movements and gestures, despite having the desire and the physical ability to execute them (NINDS, 2005). There are many different types of Apraxia which can occur, either alone or at the same time. What this means is that those with Ideational apraxia have poor planning and may use objects inappropriately. For example, De Renzi et al. (1968) found that patients were unable to use a toothbrush when instructed to, however they could use it normally at home. Ideational apraxia becomes more of a problem as it starts to interfere with daily routines of simple actions, such as eating breakfast, and it also becomes a problem when dealing with complex actions as the person may perform movements in incorrect …show more content…
Their study looked at patients with right hemisphere damage, examining their visuospatial abilities and comprehension of narrative materials. The study found that patients displayed prevalent and severe impairments as those with constructional apraxia. This goes against Liepmann and Geschwind’s notion of apraxia as the result of left hemisphere deficits, as it highlights the similar severity of apraxia being shown in patients with right hemisphere
