The caste system did not allow them to travel overseas however the British did not care to address this problem (Causes). The British started to act more superior to the Indians and this grew more hatridge toward the British. Most of the Indians in the East India Company's army came from peasant families which got paid less than the British that were doing the same job (Causes). In the end the immediate cause of the Indians revolting was the introduction to greased cartilage in 1856 (Causes). As stated in the Sepoy Mutiny article “The loading process of the Enfield rifle involved bringing the cartridge to the mouth and biting of the top paper... the greased cartridge contained the fat of cow and pig” (Causes). This angered the Indians because the fat of a cow and pig was sacred to Hindus and later forbidden to Muslims which finally convinced the Indians that the British were trying to take away their religion (Causes). The U.S. in Afghanistan is a good example of this and that is why it was acceptable for them. In Afghanistan, the U.S. are currently rebuilding schools, hospitals, and bridges to make Afghanistan a country again (Sciutto). Afghanistan is going on the right foot after being imperialized by the United States. On the other hand, in India there is lots of poverty. In India 73% of households live in villages, where less than 5% earn enough to pay taxes, and less than 10% of people have salaried jobs (Katyal). In addition, Katyal wrote, “Not only does rural India have miserable statistics on income and asset ownership, its literacy rates are low. Only 3.5% of students graduate and around 35.7% of residents can't read or write” (Katyal). This shows how India is struggling as a country.
