Identity (citizenship)
• U.S. Citizenship but raised 10 years in Nigeria.
• Left the U.S. at age 6 hating white people when she found out what white people did to Martin Luther King. She said if it wasn’t for her leaving to Nigeria she would’ve been a racists to white people.
• Finished high school at age 16 in Nigeria.
• Came to the U.S. at 16 and started community college right away.
• Nigerian people skin color is “black.”

When it comes to identifying her race…as black instead of Nigerian. She mentioned to me that she feels discriminated because she doesn’t get to identify herself as a Nigerian.

Question: has race affected your experience in school?
Interviewee: The right decision by far that I have made was attending to a school that is so diverse.
She mentions “smart choice I did was attend to UIC where its so diverse. I have never felt left out at UIC because it’s so diverse. There might be some classes where I do feel left out by being the only black skin color person in class.”
Quote: “If I wasn’t Nigerian a lot of people would think I am black…it only takes couple of people to ask me who I am instead of assuming I am black based on my color skin.” Question: Has race affected your experience in your choice of career?
