She was born Katherine Anne Couric on January the 7th, 1957 in Arlington, Virginia. Couric was the youngest of four children born to journalist parents, Elinor Tullie and John Martin Couric. Her mother only wrote part time because she spent most of her time at home as a homemaker.
Couric studied American Studies at the University of Virginia where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 1979.
After graduating she began her reporting career in Washington, D.C, where Katie had the honor of working as an assistant to Sam Donaldson at ABC. Next she worked at CNN as an assignment editor, and occasionally as an on-air reporter in Atlanta and she later transferred to a job in Miami when she felt her career was not advancing. She would later return to Washington, D.C. Later, she worked at NBC where she held several positions.

She wrote The Brand New KId in 2000. It was a best seller. She wrote another children’s book a few years later. It was also a best seller.
In 1994, Couric became co-anchor of “Now” (an evening time weekly TV newsmagazine) with Tom Brokaw. She remained at NBC News for fifteen years until May 31, 2006, when she moved to CBS, becoming the first solo female anchor of the "big three" weekday nightly news broadcasts. Couric made history as the first solo female anchor on a major nightly news broadcast. Her name was in many news reports about this great accomplishment. She was breaking barriers for women in journalism.
In 2013 Couric started working for Yahoo reporting news. She currently remains with the company, but there are rumors she may be on her way out. Couric will always be a major part of women’s journalism because she broke so many barriers along her career
