Marijuana has always been portrayed as a bad thing, and the government has led us to believe that by classifying it as a schedule one drug along with heroin and other opiates. Over the years, many Americans have changed their thinking about the legalization of marijuana. People are starting to realize that the effects of marijuana can be positive, and the tax revenue it brings in for the state is outrageous, not to mention lower crime rates in places that already do have it legalized. With all the research that has been done on marijuana and the effects it actually has on people, recreational marijuana should be legalized throughout the United States.

Many times with drinking alcohol, a person can develop alcoholic liver disease or even liver cancer. When someone binge drinks, they can literally die. To much alcohol at one time can shut down part of your brain that is in control of important bodily functions such as breathing and your heart beating. Someone cannot physically smoke enough weed to die of an overdose. However there are thousands of deaths each year from binge drinking. Cigarettes have so many unnatural substances in them, as well as nicotine which will get people addicted to them. Cigarettes are a direct cause of lung cancer, yet the only adverse effects of marijuana can include bronchitis, lung infections, and a chronic cough (“Marijuana” 2.) If prices lower and everyone can grow, then they are worried that people are going to bypass the licensed stores and buy from the black market, so there is no tax involved, resulting in lower prices. In reality, most people are going to go to a local dispensary because it would be legal and eventually, as the industry grows, and places settle in, prices will drop and the black market shouldn’t have that big of an impact on it. There will definitely be some black market buying and selling, however when people take a look at Colorado’s tax revenue just in the first year Marijuana was legalized, they made over two million
