Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird and Lily from The Secret Life of Bees are very alike but at the same time they aren’t alike. Scout and Lily’s views of their stand in mother change as the books goes on. I will write about how Scout and Lily think about their stand in mothers in the beginning of the book, how they view their stand in mothers changes throughout the book, and how they treat their stand in mothers.
First thing is how Scout and Lily view their stand in mothers in the beginning of the book. For Scout it was a little harder to let Calpurnia in than it was for Lily to let Rosaleen in. Scout thought that Cal favored Jem and hated her. (Insert quote on that) While for Lily it was a little easier, maybe because she was older, or it was the only person who cared for her, but the relationship was not like a mother and daughter relationship. So as I said in the last paragraph Lily and Cal didn’t have a very great start. As Jem and Scout got older they started to part ways. Lily started to stay inside with Cal as the boys went outside to play. Scout then started to learn her manners with Aunt Alexandra and learned how to be a girl. At the end of the book Scout and Cal’s relationship was pretty good. Now for Lily and Rosaleen it was a little different. They started off ok with a pretty good relationship but as they ran away it started to get rocky and they didn’t see eye to eye on most things. As they met August and her sisters they seemed to reconnect and build a strong relationship. At they end of the book, even though it had taken some big blows, their relationship was about like a mother and daughter relationship.
