After fleeing Afghanistan to Pakistan in a fuel truck with no light, due to the occupation of Afghanistan by the Russians. Amir and the fleeing refugees he is with, step out into Pakistan to find Kamul, one of the refugee, had stopped breathing. The father of Kamul was overwhelmed with denial and grief as his son died in his arms. He irrationally grabbed a gun, put it in his mouth, and shot as Amir watched “I’ll never forget the echo of the blast.or the flash of light and spray of red” (Hosseini 124). The section is meant to show how traumatic this event is to the narrator. The author uses choppy short sentences to create a natural pause between each of the narrator's senses to let the readers grasp the gravity of what he wrote. When Amir says “I’ll never forget the echo of the blast” Hosseini shows how deeply it affected the protagonist. Importantly another technique that the author uses is descriptive language to paint a clear picture for the readers of what Amir was experiencing. When Hosseini writes “The flash of light and spray of red” it creates a clear gruesome image of what Amir sees. Through these techniques and literary devices Khaled Hosseini tries to portray emotion and importance in the novel
