What are the school aims and targets for this academic year?
The schools aims this year are too increase the whole school attendance to above 92% at least. It also wants to improve all aspects of pupils learning like; quality of pupils reading and writing and also improving examination results. The school also wants the standard of teaching to improve which will consequently improve pupils learning.
The school also wants to offer extra-curricular opportunities for all pupils in a wide range of activities (sporting and curriculum).
In this section of Unit 1, The Business Environment, you need to complete the following tasks.
Task 1 – Description of the three main organisational structures that a business can use.
Hierarchical Structure -
The main advantage of the hierarchical organisation is that it clearly defines authority. It also shows the levels within each department. Employees will be very loyal to their set department. However departments could make decisions which could benefit there department, not the full school as a whole. This promotes inter-department rivalry.

Flat Structure -
A flat structure used by an organisation will have few layers of management. This means that the chain of command from top to bottom is short and the span of control is wide. Employees with the most authority/power will be in the top layers and those with the least will be towards the bottom.

Matrix Structure -
All of members of each department within a business work together ; so this means that everybody in the business has equal responsibilities and authority over each other. There is no chain of command in matrix structure. This structure is used for making projects within a business.

Teaching Staff Structure (Hierarchical, flat or matrix) -
This is a short version of Hierarchical structure. It is laid out as head teacher at the top going down to deputy head teachers and assistant head teachers. It then goes down to leaders of different subjects within school and teachers of that subject.
This is set up in the hierarchical structure because it is designed to incorporate all departments within a business.. The top levels of these chains are the people with the most power and the higher you are the more authority you have over the ones lower.
The teaching staff of Benfield School is a hierarchical structure because there are: the head, the deputy head, three assistant heads, heads of departments and normal teachers as well as SEN and EAL departments.
Senior Leadership Team Structure (Hierarchical, flat or matrix)-
At the top the head teacher has the most power; he has the overruling power over the full senior leadership team. It then goes to deputy head and then assistant heads. The two assistant heads have the same power however both have different types of jobs to attend to. This also can be seen as a matrix structure because all of these people will have to work together as senior leaders.
