Misunderstood Outlooks

In this world there will always be differences and misunderstood outlooks caused by people and opinions. In Sightlines 10 written by Mary Crane, Barbara Fullerton, and Amanda Joseph, it shows the differences of religion, opinions, and beliefs. When people understand a difference it makes people more accepting.

In Lysandra’s Poem by Budge Wilson, Elaine and Lysandra have a difference of opinion and resolve their conflicts by understanding on and other. Letitia's mother had to cross the American border in order to see her daughter. Before crossing she was asked her citizenship, she stated “Blackfoot” (82 King). To Laetitia's mother blackfoot was her citizenship she did not identify as Canadian. Laetitia's mother's answer of being blackfoot however was not a valid answer at the border. After multiple times of trying to cross the border she was stuck in between the American and Canadian border as both countries would not accept the answer of blackfoot. Laetitia's mother and her son were stuck at a store for multiple days until a police officer named Mel supposedly called the media. The son and mother were questioned by the media, the son stated, “Every so often the reporters would come over and ask questions about how it felt to be Indian without a country … the television people went over to the American border, and then they went to the Canadian border” (87 King). After the mother’s reasoning was explained on the news they were accepted into the American border and were able to see Laetitia. They were accepted into the country because their difference of belief of citizenship was understood by both border officers and made people accept her answer of stating her identity was blackfoot. Sultana often had people with preconceived thought on why she wore a hijab, many often thought that she was under duress or oppressed. Sultana stated, “People ask me if I feel oppressed, I can honestly say no. I made this decision out of my free will” (53 Yusufali). Sultana had made the decision to wear a hijab because it makes her feel equal to both man and woman. She feels that people can not discriminate her based on her physical appearance and in order to know her will need to communicate and learn who she is as a person. She hopes that after writing this article that the people who discriminate her for wearing a hijab will be more understanding of her religion and her as a person.
