The Marine Corps has many bases both in the United States and in many countries around the world. In the United States, it operates 13 bases, each fulfilling a unique purpose. Table 1 outlines the location and purpose of each marine base and a smaller location referred to as Henderson Hall. Four basic terms are required to understand the purpose of each base. A Marine Corps Logistics Base (MCLB) refers to a base responsible for outfitting all other Marine Corps Bases; there are only two MCLBs. A Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) focuses on air force related military training and deployment. MCAGCC refers to the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, of which only one exists. Lastly, a general Marine Corps Base (MCB) has many different functions. Camp Pendleton is a MCB. In addition to the bases included in Table 1, the Marine Corps also has two recruitment depots in San Diego, California and Parris Island, South Carolina. Customs, Border Patrol, the Orange County Sheriff's Department, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Young Marines, the Sea Cadets, and the Devil Pups (Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, n.d.). Both reservists and retirees also utilize the base. The population of military members who utilize and operate within the camp are as follows: 42,000 active duty personnel, 77,000 retired personnel, and 23,500 reserve personnel.
