Many of us read books left and right but have you ever really thought about what type of literature you are reading? How about the authors writing that literature? Or maybe how it is written? Well In Chinese literature their methods of writing vary from those used in other cultures. Chinese literature is literature using many metaphors to describe something that everyone can understand. This was before western culture was brought into Chinese culture. Many Chinese authors such as Meng Chiao, Lin Shang Yin, and Lanling Xiaoxiao Sheng. Meng chiao lived his life in poverty. He took the Imperial Examinations late in life, if he had taken the examination earlier he could have had a good career but sadly he did not. This lead to necessities being scarce for most of his life. Li Shang Yin lived a pretty good life working for the imperial service. Both Meng Chiao and Lin Shang Yin Lived in the tang dynasty. He pursued a life as a government official but was not very successful. His style of writing is more complex and harder to understand but why is that? Li Shang Yin also lived within the Tang Dynasty so how did the culture within China in this era affect him as a writer? Since the government was very oppressive during the Tang Dynasty Li Shang Yin also resorted to figurative language. Although he used more than just metaphors, He also used personification and other forms of figurative language in order to mask his messages from the government. Since Li Shang Yin was more wealthy than Meng Chiao he most likely had more access to higher education. This is why his writing style is more complex and uses a wide variety of vocabulary. Even though his writing style is so much more complex than that of Meng Chiao it still has a meaning that he wants people to understand. It may be more difficult to read and comprehend, but he is using the figurative language to work his way around the government so he does not get in
