Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born February 17, 1963 in Brooklyn NY. He grew up in Wilmington North Carolina. Michael was the fourth of five children. He loved sports as a child. He played baseball and basketball. When he was sophomore at Laney High School he was cut from the varsity team because he was to short and not good enough. That summer he practiced non-stop and soon become the player he had always dreamed of. His senior year he averaged 25 points a game and was selected on the Mcdonald’s All-American team. That year the USA won the gold medal for men’s basketball. Michael also got to go to the Olympics four years later in Barcelona, Spain where he helped the USA bring home yet another gold medal in men’s basketball.
In 1991 Michael won his first NBA championship with the Bulls. Altogether he had six NBA championships, was selected for the NBA All-star game, named Rookie of the Year, had six NBA finals MVP awards, five regular season MVP awards, three All-star game MVP awards, and a defensive player of the year award.
Although we mostly hear about Michael Jordan’s success, he has had times of great tragedy in his life. Including the death of his father in 1993. His father was robbed and murdered while driving on interstate 95 in North Carolina.
Months later Michael announced his retirement and went to play Major League Baseball with the Chicago White Socks. The next year in 1995 he went back to the NBA to play with the bulls. Four years later Michael announced once again that he was going to retire.
