Literacy activities I have devised have been appropriate to the needs of the children to support the development of their reading, writing, speaking /talking and listening skills.
Activity 1.
Firstly I read to a group of 5 children a story about Cinderella, after the children had listened to the story I got the higher ability children to re-write the story in their own words and and what was their favourite part of the story. When the children were writing their story I supported them by asking them to sound out any new words/ language that they have learnt, also I reminded them of the formation of their letter’s that they start from the top and not the bottom. I prompted the children to remember finger spaces, capital letters, and full stops.
With the lower ability children, I gave them a worksheet (see attached) and I asked them to put them in the correct order of the story. This showed me that the children knew sentence structure as it had a beginning and an end. I asked the children “Can anyone point to a capital letter or does anyone know where the full stop goes?”
Once they had finished their work in turn the higher ability children read out their version of the story. The children read with confidence and fluency. The lower ability children talked about their favourite part of the story and also they understood the structure of the story.
Activity 2.
Some of the lower ability children had been struggling with reading their words, so I planned to play a High Frequency Word Bingo, as they love the number game bingo.
I printed off some bingo word cards and laminated them (see attached worksheet).
I gave each child a card with some star stickers. I
