Scene examination was conducted in a systematic approach in accordance to NFPA 921, by beginning in the area of least damage and moving toward areas of greater damage. A safety survey of the scene revealed no imminent hazards were present. Beginning my investigation on the exterior of the house and moving in a clockwise rotation. Facing the structure from 7th Street, the structure was a multi-family single story duplex. No fire or smoke patterns were found on the exterior of the structure. Upon my investigation of inside of the residence. The residence did not have utilities connected to 3001 ½ and the front door was forced open by fire suppression crews. In the center of the room was an area of charred debris, which resembled personal trash and bits of clothing. The ceiling and the upper portions of the walls were stained with soot . Near the charred area, I found a cigarette lighter and discarded smoking materials. Continuing my investigation, I entered into the kitchen. The only appliances that were present were the stove and hot water heater, which were inoperable due to the residence not having utilities. Along the rear wall was sink, inside of the sink I found more charred debris. The entire kitchen floor and ceiling was covered in a heavy black soot and some charred clothing was found. As I left the kitchen, I entered a small bedroom that was situated at the right/front corner of the house. No charred items or smoke staining was found in this room. Continuing into the second bedroom that was located at the right/rear corner of the house. Inside of this room, I found several items of clothing and (2) charred spots on the floor. The first area, the items that were attempted to burn were checkbooks. The checks belonged to an individual from Laplace Louisiana, I collected the checks and verified through Regions Bank that the checks were old and the account was deactivated.
