In hip hop femininity is often portrayed in a negative manner, women are seen as the weaker sex, therefore, anything that is seen in association with femininity is heavily scrutinised. Connell and Messerschmidt (2005) would describe this as hegemonic masculinity. They suggested that hegemonic masculinity is men trying to distance themselves from feminine behaviour to not appear weak. This is harmful as it makes it appear that there is something wrong with being female. Men are expected to keep their emotions in otherwise they could be negatively stereotyped.
