There have been numerous misinterpretations and myths that corroded the public’s understanding of Charles Darwin’s ideas. For example, evolution is continually argued by some people that believe it is not a valid scientific theory because it is unable to be tested. Of course, this is not true, scientist have successfully ran countless laboratory tests that support evolution. Another misconception, are whether or not humans descended from apes, most notably the chimpanzee. In the article, Ninety-Eight Percent Alike, Jonathan Marks takes an interesting perspective on the similarity between humans and apes, the genetics, and understanding of genetics. Humans and Chimpanzees differ just a little over one percent genetically. In fact biologically speaking, chimpanzees are closely related to humans than they are gorillas. However, “in the Ninety-Eight Percent Alike”, Jonathan Marks believes the difference in genomes between humans and chimpanzees are misleading to the public’s perception. He states “the pattern we encounter genetically is actually quite close to the pattern we encounter anatomically” (Marks 3), in other words, humans are recognizable different, as well as quite similar to chimpanzees. …show more content…
When you get into the whole DNA sequencing and all that stuff I am sure they will match 98 out of 100 times. Side by side are they similar? Sure, but what if there was another equation added to the problem? Would that change anything? Well, Mr. Marks seems to believe that instead of asking “How similar are a human and a chimp” we ought to ask “How similar are a human and a chimp compared to what?” (Marks 2), since humans are not exclusively descendants of apes, but fish and other ancestry plants and animals, we take that into equations as
