An operating system (OS) is a program that executes other programs and applications in a computer. It also acts as an intermediary between a user of a computer and the computer hardware. The users are able to interact directly with the operating system through a user interface such as command language interface (CLI) or graphical user interface (GUI). Operating systems perform essential tasks such as storing or keeping files and directories on the disk, recognizing input from the keyboard and mouse, delivering output to the monitor screen and also controlling peripheral equipment like printers and disk drives. The operating system plays an important role to make sure that different programs and users are running at the same time and do not obstruct with each other.
