It is important for health care providers to remain aware that the action of seeking out childhood vaccination services rests with the individual behavior of the parent and/or guardian. Potential barriers to optimal childhood vaccination rates associated with parents have included being single, less than 25 years of age, born overseas, low household income and low or high education levels (Turner, Boyle & O'Rourke, 2003). As student nurse, I was able to recognize the mother of my patient, met all of these barriers. It was then my responsibility as a student nurse, to help this mother overcome the barriers. In these types of situations, healthcare staff are oftentimes the front lines in assessing barriers, recognizing risks, and develop a pertinent intervention even if it is just education or a referral.
