Have you ever had to be away from home and loved ones for a long time facing many challenges just to get back home? In The Odyssey and O Brother Where Art Thou, they were put to the test to get back home, but their love for home remained stronger than any challenge they faced. In both movies they experienced many of the same things while on their way home. The two movies compare because they both were accused of false deaths, gained popularity similarly, and had loved ones not remember them. In The Odyssey, Odysseus was gone many years in war. He had a son and wife that he left while he went to fight in the Trojan war. Eventually their faith was running thin on him coming back home. Everyone told his wife and son that Odysseus wasn’t coming back home due to his death in battle. In O Brother Where Art Thou, Everett was also accused of a false death like Odysseus. He had a family consisting of a wife and children to get back home to. Sadly, the wife believed and told her children that their father was smashed by a train just like Odysseus’ family believed he died in war. When he first laid his eyes on his son after many years it startled the son. He thought his dad was some sort of God, not his father. In O Brother Where Art Thou, Everett’s family also did not recognize him. He saw his children one day in town. At first his children recognized him as their father. Soon after they remembered their father supposedly was killed by a train and no longer believed the man in front of them was their father.
