D-Day (Operation Overlord) D-Day occurred on June 6th, 1944, and was the largest seaborne invasion in history. Operation Overlord was an attempt for the Allies in an attempt to retake the western coast from the Germans. The battle was lead by 24,000 paratroopers who were flown behind enemy lines late in the night. Their purpose was to secure bridges and eliminate key targets in order to enable the boats to land on the beach. On the morning of the 6th, America, Canada and Britain deployed 150,000 soldiers spread across 5 beaches and 150 miles of coastline. Due to the sheer vulnerability and lack of cover for the Allied forces, combined with the German’s having the higher ground, resulted in thousands of soldiers dying before even surpassing the beach. This was especially true at Omaha beach were the shoreline was a barrage of high cliffs. Eventually the Allies were able to take the beach.
