In my final essay, I’ve chosen to discuss the very controversial and sensitive issue that is patient confidentiality vs Public safety, specifically in terms of HIV patients. Being that I am a nursing student and have already had an HIV patient during clinical, I am very interested in discussing and learning more in depth about diseases and illnesses we touched on in class. I remember when we did our STI class and my teacher told us that if the patient does not want to tell their partner they have HIV then, even though this disease will eventually lead to death, we as health care professionals have to maintain patient confidentiality. • Part of a nurses job is to help the patient accept their disease and understand their treatments and do teaching
• If they don’t trust us then we won’t have the chance to do proper teaching
• Discuss how it could ruin relationships so it is their right to chose how and when they say it.
