Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma The Pawnee people started by migrating from Texas and Mexico to find a new home around 1200 C.E. They traveled for years and ended up settling in Oklahoma, Kansas, and parts of Nebraska around 1750 C.E (“Pawnee Tribe History, Facts, and Culture”). They were one of the first Native American tribes to settle in the Great Plains. By the mid 1500s, there were about 10,000 people in the Pawnee tribe (Waldman). Around the 1540s, Spanish, Francisco Vazquez de Coronado reported that the tribe had “large and organized farming and hunting villages situated along rivers” (“Native Americans House”). Kids would also go fishing and hunting with their fathers. Children go to school, play, and do chores around the house. Today, the Pawnee tribe is governed by council members who were elected by tribal council members (“Native Americans Facts for Kids”). Now kids go to school all the way through college and can study engineering, construction, health, human services, business, marketing, and American Indian studies. While some things are different than they were a while ago, there are some things that are still similar. Pawnees on the reservation wear regular clothing on most occasions, but they will dress in tribal clothing for tribal dances. Also, they eat most traditional foods that Pawnee ate previously, but they also eat other nontraditional foods as well. Today, Pawnee Nation is about 458 square miles. Now, it has a trading center, wellness center, travel center, and more places that supply the Pawnee with their basic needs.
