I spent this past summer in the Penn Program for Public Service (PPPS), designing programs for, and educating high school students about lead in their city, and raising awareness about the need for intervention in their communities. Much of this work was inspired by the recent “Out Toxic City” series released in the Philadelphia Inquirer, highlighting the disparities in the incidence of lead poisoning in Philadelphia communities. Comparable to the instance in Flint, the dilemma in Philadelphia highlighted distinct inequities in public health regulations and policies among predominantly black and minority communities.
