Perseverance is defined as steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement. The book Stung by Bethany Wiggins was based on the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. It begins with Fiona who fell asleep as a thirteen-year-old, but when she wakes up, she is in the body of a seventeen-year-old. She awakes to a beastly creature that resembles her twin brother, Jonah. All of her family is either dead from the bee flu or turned into beastly creatures. Fiona makes friends and enemies throughout the book, but she must find a way to hide her identity and attempt to find the cure to the lethal bee flu that has taken control over Jonah's body. When she’s walking through what used to be her neighborhood, she passes a house that not like the others. She stops and views a little boy and thinks to herself, “The boy gives each child a worm, then hands one to the woman. Once everyone else has had one, he takes one for himself, eating the wriggling creature in little bites, savoring it” (96). The little boy and his family are so scarce on food that they must savor each bite of a worm to stay alive. This shows the hardship of the men, women, and children that are still left on the earth. Fiona must find some source of food and water, but she can’t bring herself up to eat an innocent worm that is trying to stay alive just like everyone else.
