Relationships In The Movie 'Grease'

Literature, movies, music, art all contain an infinite amount of love stories that exist to date. One of my all-time favorites is the love story between Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson in the movie musical Grease (1978). Sandy and Danny had a summer romance that they believed was over because Sandy had to return to Australia. However, she ended up staying and going to the same high school as Danny. It took them a while to pick their relationship back up because of their differences, but eventually overcame them, though it was not easy. How their relationship progresses throughout the movie can be analyzed by examining how emotion, proximity, repeated exposure, similarity, physical beauty, and familiarity came into play. It is much easier to have a relationship with a person that is closer since proximity brings a greater chance for contact between the two people and therefore increasing the attraction towards each other. It has been proven that “people who live or work in close proximity are likely to become acquainted, form friendships, and even marry one another” (Branscombe & Baron, 2017, p. 229). In most relationships, people understand that the larger the distance between the people, the more difficult the relation would prove to be. Therefore, it makes sense that when the summer was over Danny and Sandy chose to end their summer romance. Typically, the more similar that two people are to each other, the more likely they will like each other. A way to determine how attracted two people will be to each other is through the use of the proportion of similarity, which is the number of similar views divided by the total number of topics they have discussed (2017). However, Danny and Sandy fall into the other theory of similarity that “opposites attract”. Danny is a popular, greaser and Sandy is a preppy cheerleader.
