Studies have shown that there are 42 million women living in poverty and 13 million are raising children. The documentary, Paycheck to Paycheck, addresses this issue by portraying the life of a single, working mother named Katrina who struggles to provide for herself and her three children. Society is aware that it is not easy to live as a single parent struck by poverty while doing everything in their power to give their children the proper care and support they need.
Through this documentary, people are introduced to the choices, support, and social structural factors that affect a mother and their family living in poverty.
Within the documentary, Katrina is living paycheck to paycheck because it all started when she married at 19 years old …show more content…
She also receives mental and emotional support from her boyfriend Chris who helps take care of her and her children. This is completely beneficial for Katrina because of all the things she has to go through it is nice to have someone be there for her and make her smile. Katrina hates being alone and needs someone to “actually care and listen to what she is going through.” He also gives her kids a lot of love and support as if they were his own kids, which makes Katrina feel better about her struggles.
There are not only 42 million women living in poverty or 13 million who are mothers, there are also 28 million children who depend on a woman just like Katrina. This documentary gave a thoughtful insight into the hindrance and struggles of being a single mother living in poverty. It was insightful to see the choices, support, and social structural factors that affect a mother and their family living in poverty. Perhaps, if there could be more benefits and supports for these women then many of them would be living better lives and therefore providing a better life for their children as
