Assessment Criteria 1.1 Describe the factors to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments and services
All risk assessments are done and the environments are safe
All activities are age appropriate and suitable for all the children involved
There is the right amount of staff including first aiders
Staff handling food have food and hygiene
Policies are put in place
1.2 Explain how health and safety is monitored and maintained and how people in the work setting are made aware of risks and hazards and encouraged to work safely
Risk assessments are to be done as early as possible and if anything is not right write it down and date it on the risk assessment, let the manager know and everyone else know. We come up with a solution on how to fix it and write it on the risk assessment and the date it was fixed.
1.3 Identify sources of current guidance for planning healthy and safe environments and services
Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
Department for Education In Northern Ireland
St John Ambulance
The British Red Cross
British Standards Institute (BSI)
Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT)
EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage)
Ofsted
1.4 Explain how current health and safety legislation, policies and procedures are implemented in own work setting or service
Risk assessments have to be signed and dated by practitioner and practitioners must maybe attend courses on health and safety, food hygiene, manual handling etc. At least monthly staff meetings to update health and safety requirements and other things we feel need improving. We display the health and safety posters and make sure it is up to date. We display all policies and insurance in reception.
[CU1521.2] Be able to recognise and manage risks to health, safety and security in a work setting or off site visits
Assessment Criteria 2.1 Demonstrate how to identify potential hazards to the health, safety and security of children or young people, families and other visitors and colleagues
We do risk assessments everyday and always look out for objects and spillages on the floor. 2.2 Demonstrate ability to deal with hazards in the work setting or in off site visits
Any objects or spillages on the floor we clear up straight away. off site visits we make sure they are child friendly before taking any children there and will look out for any hazards while there. Registers are taken and updated at all times (whether in the setting out on a visit)and the correct amount of staff plus cover staff and first aiders are there in the setting and on any visit. 2.3 Undertake a health and safety risk assessment in own work setting or service illustrating how its implementation will reduce risk
I do risk assessments everyday in my setting and problems are written down and spoken about to the manager. Everyone else in the setting will then be told of the problem so they are aware and can avoid it. 2.4 Explain how health and safety risk assessments are monitored and reviewed
Any hazards are reported to the manger and arranged for it to be fixed everyone will then monitor the hazard and report it if the hazard reappears or continues.
[CU1521.3] Understand how to support children and young people to assess and manage risk for themselves
Assessment Criteria 3.1 b Explain why it is important to take a balanced approach to risk management
You need to make sure the environment is safe for everyone but the children also need to be able to explore and come across problems for them to sort out by themselves in order to learn about risks. Such as during playtime children should be allowed to ride scooters and bikes on the playground. To help them to avoid injuries the teacher and the teaching assistant speak to them about safety rules and possible risk to hurt themselves
