Since the sixteenth century, it was always thought that "Jamestown" was the world's first successfully built colony, but Americans soon discovered that there was, in fact, a colony established long before the New World on 1607. In this ambitious historic work, Karen Ordahl Kupperman states that, the main purpose of publishing "Roanoke" is to inform the audience of knowledge about the historical figures of the lost colony that disappeared in 1587 with a total of 116 English settlers. What is most interesting about the book is that the author is detailed and explains the terms specifically as to why this attempt at creating the Roanoke Colony was a suicide mission from the start and a failure. The real question today is still astounding, "Where did the lost colony of Roanoke vanish to?" However, archaeologists or anthropologists will never know the real story of what happened to them. Theories and evidence indicates that they did exist though, because they had carved the word, "Croatoan" on each door post in the village to signal Governor John White that they had moved up to the City of Raleigh,"Croatoan" when he had come back to look for them. Ralph Lane was the founder of the lost colony and led men, women, even children into the Outer Banks of North Carolina island because he assumed it would serve as a money venture base for privateering. They originated from England and when they had arrived on the island, they were determined that it would be a success. In order for a colony to be successful, Richard Hakluyt stated, “A colony needs a government that would be the ultimate fundamental in his relationship with his colonists”. They had 110 men set sail on their ship “Brave” and once they reached to England to gather the supplies, finally they were on the way back to Roanoke. However, not long after while sailing they found themselves being attacked by a French ship and they took all of their gunpowder, food, weapons and all of the supplies that were provided for the colonists. The French even kidnapped their pilot Pedro Diaz, which led them to not want to navigate without him because they were not as knowledgeable as locating destinations as he was. That led them to Britain, where White had found himself in the middle of the sea war by the Spanish Armada, after many injured men and they were finally defeated. Needless of White’s third attempt to reach back to Roanoke it seems as if harsh obstacles kept getting in the way because the last two times he tried to set sail, many of his crew ships began to get severely sick and were too weak being injured due to the hurricane storms in the sea forcing to return back to
