Ronald Reagan and the End of Cold War
There are many facets regarding the way that the Cold War really ended. Some might say it was because the President Ronald Reagan overpowered the Soviet Union after a long quite war. Michael Cox, who is the author of the article “Ronald Reagan and the End of the Cold War: The Debate Continues” explains both sides of the story. Not only has he explained about President Reagan’s actions but also about the Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev. He also comments about how President Reagan changed his mind regarding the Soviet Union from the first term to the second term as a president.
On his first term, President Ronald Reagan despised the Soviet Union; also because the Soviet Union was trying to spread communism all over the world. During this term, President Reagan saw the Soviet Union as an evil empire, which then he decided to increase military and arsenal weapons quality and was also known as Strategic Defense

Some people believed that it was because of a policy of strength and contestation that brought the Cold War to an end (Michael Cox). However, the author states that main character who really brought the Cold War to an end was the Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev. Another factor happened in the year of 1987 when the summit meetings took place and made the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Force Treaty happen. The author also emphasizes that, perhaps, without the Soviet leader Mr. Gorbachev, there would not really a peace between the United States and the Soviet Union.
Also, the unification of Germany in October 1989 was a big change that brought the end of the Cold War. One of the biggest change was the tearing down of the Berlin wall in 1987.
