Should same-sex marriage be legalized in Hong Kong?

In recent years, more homosexual people have come out to disclose their sexual orientation. Gays and lesbians may even feel pride and have higher self-esteem instead of having shame. People in Hong Kong generally are more open-minded now. There is no legal recognition of same-sex marriage in Hong Kong. In many countries or regions, the legalization of same-sex marriage is already implemented. Therefore, some may say that same-sex marriage should be accepted and allowed as it is the universal human rights of homosexual people. Hence, homosexuals or homosexual organizations are eager to strive for the legalization, otherwise, they cannot go to the next step, fight for the right of procreation and adopting children. Gays or lesbians believe that they have the right to form a family, at the same time, they also have an equal right to raise a child. However, some people disagree to this statement. Same-sex parents are different to traditional parents, Lofton has mentioned that ‘in our legal system, parental competence is, and morally ought to be, measured by the best interests of the child’ (2001, cited in Wellman, 2005, p.158). There is always a suspicion that homosexual parents cannot provide a more comfortable and better situation to the children under public morality when comparing with traditional families. It is believed that ‘homosexuals suffer lots of difficulties like psychological and economic harm, they will be easily at a disadvantage and foster disadvantaged children in our society’ (Wellman, 2005, p.160). Obviously, if gay marriage is legalized in Hong Kong, it will cause another question whether our society should allows procreational autonomy in homosexuals.
