Imagine you're buying lunch and you get your receipt and the total comes to $20.99, but you don’t have four more cents. If the penny did not exist then your total would come to an even amount such as $20.95. There is a very strong debate on whether the penny should be banned or not. Over 300 billion pennies with eleven different designs have been minted since 1787. The U.S. should ban the penny because it costs too much, it takes up too much space, and last but not least it isn’t worth very much.
First, we should get rid of the penny because it isn’t worth very much. For example, there was a donation for pennies and WMS raised $3000 in a week. If the penny was worth more then it wouldn’t be donated (Waterhouse). Another Reason, is that since the penny is worth very little a total would be rounded to the nearest five cents (Mancuso). if you were getting a sandwich and the total came to $11.07 then it would be rounded down to $11.05. Furthermore, there is a strong power in numbers because the penny can’t do much of anything on its own (Waterhouse). When people donate pennies it all adds up because it worth nothing. For example, “Pennies might be a little bulky” according to Waterhouse. Pennies just sit around on desks, dressers and in wallets. For instance “The first pennies, minted until 1857, were very large-larger than our modern day quarter” according to Maria Story. Having a penny larger than a quarter would mean it would take up even more space than a quarter. Also, according to Waterhouse pennies add up quickly. That means pennies take up space because we pick them up off of the ground and from the floor. Therefore, the penny sits on counters, in wallets, and on dressers and they take up too much space that could be used for anything
