“Shut Down your Screen Week” is a week in the year when all electronics are shut off. This week is dedicated to students, especially the ones who are always on their electronics. Schools should participate in the national “Shut Down your Screen Week”. One reason we should participate in this week band is because it would promote better physical health. Each day after school, students are occupying their time with social media, tv, and video games. After they finish with these activities, they have homework. At OIS, in order for the students to figure out their homework, internet access is needed. In lots of cases, students get distracted and start a chain of videos and games. According to a study was done by the University of California, San Diego people spend 12 hours on average on electronics. This study counts one hour of tv and using a computer at the same time as two hours. This band would prevent students from spending hours in front of an electronic device. They would resort to going outside and play with their friends. Being active is a necessity to developing kids brains. This would pause the race to be the best video maker, or getting the most followers on social media. Making kids appreciate the most simple things in life like family. For example, in the article Attached to Technology and Paying the Price, Matt Richtel writes about the Campbell family. “We didn't go out to dinner, we just sat there on out devices.” The Campbells were on a vacation where they rented a house in Carmel. Later, Mr. Campbell realized what was happening, the whole family unplugged, went to the beach and played games. This story shows how big of a difference this change could make. Mr. Nass at Stanford says that technology diminishes empathy by limiting how much people interact with each
