Salvage the Bones is a novel by Jesmyn Ward about an impoverished family in Mississippi that survives hurricane Katrina. The narrator's brother, Skeetah is often depicted as a strong and tough character that steals and stages dog fights for money but from Eschs perspective he is seen as a caring person that protects his friends and family. Strangers would view Skeetah as a disrespectful teenager that steals and fights his dog for money to survive. The view of Skeetah as a miscreant is understandable from a passerby point of view but after seeing him from a familial perspective it is easy to see that he is a very caring brother and that these views are incomplete and that there is more to Skeetah that most people do not see.
