Sophie Germain was born April-1-1776 to a Persian silk merchant named Amberoise-Francis Germain. She was the second of three sisters.When Sophie was 13 she had to stay home because of the danger caused by the revolts in Paris, because of this she was always in her father’s library. Sophie then ran across a book in which the legend Archimedes death was recounted, this began to spark an interest. She then began teaching herself math using different books in her father library. Her parent thought her interest was not good for a female. During this time the French revolution was beginning and woman were frowned upon. Her parents tried to make her lose interest in math, so she started studying at night. Her parents went to the extreme by taking her clothes, turning of the heat and lights. Her parents could not stop her love for math so they just let her learn. When she turned 18, an academy named Ecole Polytechnique was established. It was to train mathematicians and scientist. Her work also got an honorable mention because its “fundamental base of theory was not established”. Again the contest was extended and she started working on her third attempt. She then communicated with Poisson, and in 1841 he released his own work and did not give credit to Sophie for helping him. After this she turned in her third paper but this time it was under her own name. Sophie was the first woman to win a prize in the Paris Academy. She did not go to the award ceremony even though she was the last to be awarded, the judges were still bitter.
