The story of an epic hero begins with Beowulf, a story of adventure and thrill. It is written by an unknown author, however, it was edited by M.A. Roberts. Beowulf is an epic hero in countless ways, he is both a warrior and strong. He was called to protect his kingdom, and had an honor brand to Hrothgar. There are multiple challenges that he had to face in his journey to become an epic hero. He may have some assistance in becoming this heroic figure that is to be remembered for centuries. He may suffer from hubris consistently, but he overcomes this in the end. Beowulf sadly falls into this category. Throughout the poem, Beowulf takes an excessive amount of risks that are completely unnecessary just to flaunt how courageous he is. “[None had the ability] to dissuade Beowulf from swimming the dangerous main” (Roberts 29). This explains that Beowulf had gone on to swim in a race against Brecca. This competition was all about Beowulf showing that he was the bravest and strongest in the land. He was overly confident that he was the bravest and the strongest in the land. In this competition, he risks his life by fighting a hideous sea monster, and this is why he does not win. This is further addressed when he goes on to fight Grendel. He goes with the help of his men he still lets them all ventures before him so he may fight this monster by himself. Although he goes in overly confidently in a great deal of situations he is still extremely brave and it determines that he is a true warrior by defeating the sea monsters and
