Jasmín is brought to the U.S. at the age of fourth, by a trusted female smuggler. It is similar to Enrique's journey as they both have to cross the river on an inner tube. The first day Enrique met his daughter, everything is strange, sooner their relationship grows closer to each other. Although Jasmín arrives in the U.S. is a miracle, the fear of having her deported is ever present in Enrique and María Isabel. As a result, this would impact a young child like Jasmín, ''and the girl learns to hide behind cars when she is on the street and sees immigration agents'' (Nazario 250).
