Kazimir Malevich
There are many artists in the world but few can be named the founder Suprematism. However Kazimir Malevich is the founder of the Russian abstract movement of Suprematism. There are many questions to be posed what was Kazimir’s life? What were his works like and why were they important? Finally what was his impact in the art world?
Kazimir Malevich was a Russian painter and sculptor. Kazimir was born in 1879, near Kiev Ukraine. Kazimir started to draw when he was 12; he found it a career goal to become an artist. Then in 1895 he went to Kiev School of art; however in 1904 he would then change to Stroganov School of art in Moscow. However one of his most recognized paintings is The Black Square (See Fig.1).The Black Square is “79.5 cm. x 79.5 cm” (Tolstaya), the medium of the painting is oil on a canvas. The painting was created approximately 1915. The painting is white around the edges and black in the middle. It is important because some believe that the painting represents a revolutionary symbol because when it was released the “Bolshevik uprising and October Revolution” (Holthham) was happening in 1917. However to Kazimir believes that “the square represented feelings, and the white, nothingness” (Savvine). Another one of Kazimir’s paintings was that of a self-portrait of himself in 1933. The portrait was called Self-Portrait (See Fig.2.) and was also oil on canvas. This portrait is important because it was the time that Kazimir could not paint cubic art. He was not able to paint the art because they were seen as Anti-Soviet. This picture shows him wearing a red and black with a neutral background. He also signs the painting with a small black square at the bottom right. One of the paintings that represent the Suprematism the best is Eight Red Rectangles (See Fig.3.). The painting consist of what its named it has eight rectangles with different sizes and shapes. The painting is red with a neutral background. It is done with oil on the canvas and is a type of Suprematism called aerial Suprematism. It is called aerial because of the different shades of red that the painting has and how the painting is spaced out giving it the effect like the rectangles are
