Whether it’s the past or present, we all need hope in our lives. Hoping is what drives a person’s sprit to achieve great levels of prosperity. In the touching story, A Long Way Gone, by Ishmael Beah: memoires of a boy soldier, Elie Wiesel’s speech, “Hope, Despair, and Memory,” and the Los Angeles Times article “Russia Takes in Ukrainian Refugees,” hope is the heart of all mankind, even in times of war and devastation; hope is always visible, even when all seems lost.

To start with, a Ukraine refugee tells a quote he once heard, “Believing that the memory of evil will serve as a shield against evil; that the memory of death will serve as a shield against death” (“Elie Wiesel”). The memory of evil will prevent anything identical to that evil from ever happening again. Remembering the evil and the destruction in your life is very difficult, but to remember the evil will protect others from falling in the same trap. In addition, a young man is alone in a time of war. Losing his family was not the only bad part in his adventure. He had trouble adjusting to his new life. He did not give up. Hope gave him a chance to start a new life, to find new friends (“Elie Wiesel”). In other words, the man used hope to move on and prosper in life. If he didn’t have hope then he wouldn’t have ever found what he calls home. To continue, the rejection of memory of the holocaust will cause the doom to repeat over and over again (“Elie Wiesel”). If you reject the memory that caused you pain and suffering, then what will be here in the future to stop that same memory from reappearing? Therefore you must always remember the past, even when forgetting seems easier. Remembering will ensure the fate of others will not lie on the same road of which you have endured. Knowing that everything was lost, they still kept pursing happiness and protection. To propose, one of the refugees said, “They are waiting for their documents to be resolved. Then it’s up to them to decide whether they want to be here permanently. They can keep their Ukraine documents or apply for Russian citizenship (“Simmons”). No matter what people always have a choice! They could stay in the middle of the war and give up hope or they could find a way out of the war, by applying for Russian citizenship. These people had a choice whether to stay in a burning country or escape to freedom. The Ukraine refugee chose to leave and used hope to leave the country and find life somewhere else. In contrast, pro-Russian fighters, ordinary people who volunteered to fight in the war, risked their lives to protect the people of Ukraine (“Simmons”). This gave people hope. That somebody cared for them and they weren’t being shut out. It gave them hope that people were taking matters into their own hands and fighting for what’s right. In agreement, a group help establish an organization. In addition with the volunteers, this group also helped the Ukraine refugees. This group gave emergency support to the refugees, Also, the organization gave them food; water; and a resting place with protection, medicine, and shelter (“Simmons”). People do care for others.
