Chapter 14 The Resurgence of Empire in East Asia After the fall of the Han Dynasty regional kingdoms began to try and take power over all of China. It wasn’t until the late sixth century someone was able to do so. Yang Jian rose to power when a Turkish ruler named him duke of Sui. After this ruler passed in 580 C.E. Yang Jian claimed the throne for himself as well as the Mandate of Heaven. During the next few years Jian sent military forces into central Asia and into southern China. By 589 the house of Sui was in control of all of China. The emperors of the Sui dynasty put an emphasis on creating a strong centralized government. Tang forces took control of Manchuria in the north, made the Silla kingdom of Korea to subject to Tang rule, took over the northern region of Vietnam, and extended their reign as far west as the Aral Sea. The Tang empire became one of the largest in Chinese history. Tang rulers maintained tributary relations with neighboring lands. These lands would recognize Tang rulers as their overlords and would pay tributes to the Tang kingdom. Although the Tang dynasty was very successful during the mid-eighth century bad leaders brought the dynasty into a crisis. In 755 one of Tang’s top military commanders led a rebellion and captured Chang’an and Luoyang. But by 763 Tang forces brought the rebellion to an end but was greatly weakened. The equal field system began to fall apart and Tang troops were unable to push back Turkish invaders. In the ninth century more rebellions had arose and in order to end them tang rulers gave regional military leaders more power and authority. The first Song emperor was Song Taizu. He ruled from 960-970. Taizu served one of the most powerful warlords in china and in 960 his forces declared him emperor. In the next few years he and his troops brought the other warlords under his authority and eventually took control of china. Song Taizu focused on creating a strong centralized government and kept a tight control over the military. His officials were awarded well for their loyalty. Song leaders created more opportunities for people to take part in the Confucian education and civil services, they also offered high salaries to people who qualified for the government
