“The American Dream: Dead, Alive, or on Hold?”
The “American Dream” is what we all strive for. But what is the American Dream? According to James Truslow Adams it is “the dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability and achievement, regardless of social class or circumstances of birth.” Brandon King disagrees when he writes the essay “The American Dream: Dead, Alive, or on Hold? King redefines the American Dream today as the potential to work for an honest, secure way of life and save for the future. He also believes that the American Dream is more alive than ever and very important but is also morphing and changing the meaning due to prolonged economic circumstances. In this writing Brandon King discusses liberal economists’ and activists’ opinions on the American Dream, then goes on to tell his view on the American Dream. In my opinion, the American Dream is planning for the future and working now in order to play later in life. I disagree with King’s view on the American Dream still being alive. The dream is no longer alive. We as a society no longer think for the future, we settle for moments of flashy items and greed.

I do not believe people work to save for future, but for the moment. I believe people work for flashy materialistic items, and to brag but, not many save for retirements or emergencies.
