The Glass Castle by Janette Wall is an inspirational book. This is a self biography of Janette Wall the author. She takes us through her very difficult childhood where we meet many complicated characters. The most surprising characters are her own parents. Her parents are not typical parents. They have very unique ways of parenting and their ideologist are very peculiar. Her father Rex Wall is one of the most intriguing characters. His way of parenting is very difficult he teaches his kids in very distinct ways, he does not provide for his family or takes good care of them. This is due to his alcoholism and his selfish ideologies. He definitely had a big impact on Janette's life, however this influence was not necessarily good for Janette. He did a good job at teaching Janette mathematical skill but he did a horrible job at teaching her simple skills like swimming. His ideas of teaching his kids life lessons were very illogical and perverse. Normally a parent would teach their kids how to swim in a controlled supervised environment like a pool, but Rex hated anything mainstream. Therefore, Rex taught Janette how to swim at the “Hot Pot,” this was a famous hot spring that was so deep that nobody had reach the bottom and had so much sulfate it could burn your face off. The water in this hot spring was so dark you could see what was under you and it was a place were many drunks and teenagers had drowned. Rex would throw Janette and let her drown for a bit until she learned had a swim or survive. This was an awful technique because it made Janette fear even more the water. This traumatized Janette and made her not trust him as much. He used to say “If you don’t want to sink, you better figure out how to swim” (Walls 66) for him this were also life lessons he was teaching her but it was a very insensitivity and irresponsible way making him have a very scaring impact in Janette's
