Marcus Luttrell changed in various ways throughout the novel, The Lone Survivor. In the beginning of the story Marcus was a young kid who grew up in Texas, Marcus’s father was always tough on him and pushed him to his limits. As a hardworking young man who loved the water, scuba diving, and spending time in the outdoors, Marcus decided to attempt to join the Navy SEALS after his brother Morgan said he was going to join them. He performed very well in his SEAL training due to his rich background of spending time training in the wilderness, in the water, and the gym. Marcus was a trainee of a man named Billy Shelton. During Marcus’s childhood, his family and him were very close and enjoyed spending time together. Marcus and his brother played together and trained with their father, while at night they still enjoyed family time together. When Marcus was young his father taught him how to scuba dive in the lake. After months of training Marcus became a very good diver and people would pay him to retrieve items that had gone into the lake. His father believed that this was too easy for him so he only allowed Marcus to get paid if he found the correct item.(Luttrell 52). While at the time this might have seemed cruel and rough on Marcus but after his time serving as a Navy SEAL, I believe he appreciated it knowing that his father was doing these things for a purpose. Marcus and his brother, Morgan, were close as kids, they played sports together, trained together and aspired to have the same career as one another.
