The Devil Tower belongs to various Indian tribes that have a connection to the tower. However, each tribe has their version of how the Devil Tower comes into existence. Amongst the various legends, tribes such as the Kiowa, Arapaho, Crow, Cheyenne and Sioux tells the story of seven girls that were trailed by a bear. The girls fled into the woods with the bear gaining speed on them, which led them to jump on a rock. The girls begin to implore the Great Spirit to rescue them from the bear. As the Great Spirit heard their voices, the rock start to rise in the direction of the sky. The bear begins expressing annoyance jumping up on the tower, which it explains the marking on the sides of the tower from bear claws. As the rock rose higher towards the sky, it moved the girls higher in heaven, which they became known as the seven stars of the Pleiades.
