However, the dramatic narrative is what gives the book it’s distinctive and this is what is significant for determining the message of numbers. Judgment was effected, grace was given, but Israel continued to rebel. Those whom God had redeemed from slavery in Egypt and to whom he had displayed grace at Mount-Sinai responded with indifference in gratitude, and repeated acts of rebellion. The Exodus generations were ultimately forbidden to enter the land of Promise, and it was made to live out their lives in the wilderness because they defiantly refused to obey Yahweh and enter the land of Promise to take possession.
